A California man serving life in prison for four murders has been charged with killing his wife during an overnight family visit.
On Wednesday (August 13), 55-year-old David Brinson was charged with murder in connection with the November 2024 death of Stephanie Dianne Dowells at Mule Creek State Prison, per PEOPLE.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) said Brinson called prison officials just after 2 a.m. to report that his wife had passed out during an overnight family visit. Officers attempted life-saving measures, but Dowells was later pronounced dead. Her death was ruled a homicide by strangulation.
Brison was convicted in 1993 of killing four men during a robbery and is serving four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
Dowells' family attorney, Michael Oppenheimer, released a statement after Brinson was charged with her killing on Wednesday.
“While nothing can bring Stephanie back to her family, this is the first step towards getting justice for her brutal murder. We thank the District Attorney for doing the right thing. This and other murders should have never happened and could have been prevented by the State of California," the attorney said.
Brinson has not yet entered a plea and is scheduled to be arraigned on Sept. 19.
