A Virginia high school track star was left with a concussion and possible skull fracture after she was hit in the head with a baton by an opponent during a race, per PEOPLE.

The incident unfolded on Friday (March 7) during the state indoor championship held at Liberty University. Kaelen Tucker, a junior at Brookville High School, was competing in the 4x200 meter relay when another runner raised her baton and hit Tucker on the head. Video of the attack shows Tucker holding her head and falling towards the infield as her opponent kept running in the race.

Doctors told Tucker she had a concussion and possible skull fracture after the incident.

“I was so in disbelief. I didn’t even know what happened. I just know I got hit in the head, and I just fell off the track," Kaelen recalled.

“I still can’t believe it. I’m still in shock. But I’m still trying to take it all in," she added.

As a result of the hit, IC Norcom High School team was disqualified from the event. The Virginia High School League (VHSL) said they've launched an investigation into the incident.

"The actions taken by the meet director to disqualify the runner were appropriate and correct. We thoroughly review every instance like this that involves player safety with the participating schools. The VHSL membership has always made it a priority to provide student-athletes with a safe environment for competition," VHSL said in a statement.
